The Dr Who star, Jon Pertwee was born 7th July 1919.  After service in the Royal Navy and the Naval Intelligence Division during World War II, in his early career he worked as a vaudeville comedian, which included sharing a bill with Max Wall and Jimmy James. As an actor, Pertwee appeared in many comedy roles, including four films in the Carry On series. He was once described as having "rubbery features and ability to affect silly voices".

Pertwee became best known for spending 18 years (1959–1977) playing Chief petty officer Pertwee in the popular series The Navy Lark on BBC Radio, as well as starring on television as the Third Doctor in the science-fiction series Doctor Who between 1970 and 1974. He had further success playing the title character in the television series Worzel Gummidge from 1979 to 1981 (reprising the role from 1987 to 1989).

Wyndham Goldie was born on 5th July 1897 in Rochester, England as Frank Wyndham Goldie.

He appeared in a number of films mostly during the 1930’s and 1940’s including Lorna Doone 1934, The Black Mask 1935, The Return of carol Deane 1938, Rake’s progress 1939, The Arsenal Stadium Mystery 1939, Girl in the News 1940 and Nurse Cavell 1948.

In 1940 he played the part of Dryton (pictured) in Night Train to Munich.

He died 26th September 1957.

The Irish film actor Brefni O’Rorke was born in Dublin on 26th June 1889.  He had a very productive but short career appearing in many films released during the 1940’s.

A few of the more notable films that he appeared in include: Love on the Dole 1941, Cottage to Let 1941, The Day Will Dawn 1942, Unpublished Story 1942, We’ll Meet Again 1943, Tawny Pipit 1944, The Rake’s Progress 1945, I See a Dark Stranger 1946, The Upturned Glass 1947 and Jassy 1947.

He appeared in the WW2 propaganda film Next of Kin in 1942 playing the part of Brigadier Blunt (pictured).

He died 11th November 1946.

The English actor Dennis Price was born 23rd June 1915 (born Dennistoun Franklyn John Rose-Price).  The actor is best remembered for his role as Louis Mazzini in the film Kind Hearts and Coronets (1949) and for his portrayal of the omniscient valet Jeeves in 1960s television adaptations of P. G. Wodehouse's stories.

He was initially a stage actor who served in the Royal Artillery during World War II but quickly returned to acting after discharge.  His first film appearance was in 1944 when he appeared in A Canterbury Tale and when on to appear in over 100 films.

For fans of Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne, he appeared in Helter Skelter (1949) as Lord Byron (pictured).

Some of the other notable films that he appeared in include Holiday camp (1947), Kind hearts and Coronets (19490, Murder Without Crime (1950), The Magic Box (1951), Private’s progress (1956), I’m Alright Jack (1959), School for Scoundrels (1960), Double Bunk (1961), Doctor in Distress (1963) and Ten Little Indians (1965).

In 1967, Price was declared bankrupt; he attributed his financial distress to "extravagant living and most inadequate gambling". He then moved to the tax haven island of Sark, which coincided with an escalation in his alcoholism.
Towards the end of his life, Price appeared in a series of horror movies including Twins of Evil (1971), Horror Hospital (1973) and Theatre of Blood (1973), as well as five films directed by Jesus Franco.

On television he had recurring roles in the series Jason King (1971) and The Adventurer (1972).

In the book British Film Character Actors (1982), Terence Pettigrew wrote that Price's most successful screen characterisations were "refined, self-centred, caddish and contemptuous of a world inhabited by inferiors. Everything about him was deceptive. He could be penniless and still manage to look as if he owned the bank. But behind all that grand talk and lordly ways, there skulked, in his characters, the most ordinary of shabby, grasping souls."

He died 6 October 1973 at the age of 58.

Tommy Godfrey was born on 20th June 1916 in London.   The English actor had a relatively short film career but appeared in dozens of TV productions through to his death in 1984.  He died 24th June 1984.

His film career included appearances in 1949’s Passport to Pimlico as the Bus Conductor (pictured), The Missing Note 1961, Hide and Seek 1964 and The Christmas Tree 1966.
 
Of his many TV appearances, the following are the more notable: various roles in Z Cars and Softly Softly, various roles in Dixon of Dock Green, Uncle Nobby in Steptoe and Son, and as Arthur in Love Thy Neighbour and also as Sid in Mind Your Language.
 

The actress Sandra Dorne was born as Joan Smith on 19th June 1924 in Keighley, West Riding of Yorkshire.  Also known as Sandra Holt, she was often known in the 1950's as the B-film Diana Dors. With her platinum blonde hair, she was a regular female lead in B-films in the late 1940's and early 1950's.

She trained at the Rank Organisation's "charm school" and subsequently appeared in a number of their films during the 1940’s and early 1960’s.  One of her first film appearances was in 1949’s Helter Skelter where she played the role of a receptionist (pictured)

Some of her other films include; Saraband for Dead Lovers 1948, The Clouded Yellow 1950,Hindle Wakes 1952, Alf’s Baby 1953, The Gelignite Gang 1956, The Iron Petticoat 1956, Orders to Kill 1958 and The House in Marsh Road 1960.
Film roles dried up as she grew older, but she still found work and acted mainly in British television, appearing in such series as The Avengers, King of the River,  Z-Cars, The Avengers, The Third Man and a 1982 appearance as Aunt Fanny in Comic Strip Presents Five Go Mad in Dorset.

She died 25th December 1992 in London.

The Scottish actor David Hutcheson was born 16th June 1905 in 1905; he died 18th February 1976. An apt description of him is ‘a long-faced British light leading actor of cheerful disposition, often appearing as a friend of the hero’.

For fans of Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne, he appeared alongside them in Next of Kin 1942 where he played the part of Captain Johnston an Intelligence Officer (pictured).

Other notable films that he appeared in include; The Sky’s The Limit 1938, Convoy 1940, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp 1943, School for Secrets 1946, Sleeping Car to Trieste 1948, Encore 1951 and The Birthday Present 1957.

The British character actor James Robertson Justice was born 15th June 1907 in London.

He studied science at University College London, but left after a year and became a geology student at the University of Bonn, where he again left after just a year. He returned to the UK in 1927, and became a journalist  in London but after a year he emigrated to Canada, where he worked as an insurance salesman, taught English at a boys' school, became a lumberjack and mined for gold. He came back to Britain penniless, working his passage on a Dutch freighter washing dishes in the ship's galley to pay his fare.

He left Britain again to become a policeman for the League of Nations in the Territory of the Saar Basin (a region of Germany occupied and governed by France and Germany under a League of Nations mandate).  After the Nazis came to power, he fought in the Spanish Civil War on the Republican side. It was here that he first grew his signature trademark bushy beard, which he retained throughout his career. On return to Britain, he joined the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve, but after sustaining an injury in 1943 (thought to be shrapnel from a German shell), he was pensioned off.

With almost 90 film credits to his name, all in similar character roles, he is well recognised by film fans.  Two of fis first films included Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne; in 1945 he played the part of Branksom in the Facts of Life’ segment in Quartet and in 1949 he played the part of Arthur Peters (pictured) in Stop Press Girl.

There are too many films to list here but a small example include; Champagne Charlie 1944, Whisky Galore 1949, The Magnet 1950, Miss Robin Hood 1952, Doctor in the House 1954 and subsequent films in the series, The Iron Petticoat 1956, The Guns of Naverone 1961, The Fast Lady 1962 and as Lord Scrumptious in 1968’s Chitty Chitty Bang Bang.

He died 2nd July 1975.

​The American actress Shirl Conway was born 13th June 13 1916 in New York as Shirley Elizabeth Crosman. She appeared in a small number of films including the madcap British comedy Helter Skelter in 1949 – she played the role of the Cabaret Star (pictured).

Other films that she appeared in include The Strangers Came (1949), The Doctors and the Nurses (1962) and The Strangers Came (1949).

She died on 7th May 2007 in Shelton, Washington.

Frederick Valk was born 10th June 1895 in Germany of Czech Jewish descent who fled to the United Kingdom in the late 1930s to escape Nazi persecution, and subsequently became a naturalised British citizen.  The actor never received top-billing in films, but was happy to accept supporting roles in good screen productions, particularly if the role required a Germanic accent.

One of his first screen roles in the UK was in 1940 where he played the part of a Gestapo Officer (pictured) in Night Tran to Munich which starred Rex Harrison, Margaret Lockwood, Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne.  He also appeared alongside the latter two actors in 1945’s Dead of Night – he played the part of Dr Van Straaten (2nd photo).

Some of the other films that he appeared include traitor Spy 1939, Gasbags 1941, Thunder Rock 1942, Latin Quarter 1945, A Matter of Life and Death 1946, Outcast of the Islands 1951, Top Secret 1952, Albert R.N. 1953, as the Kommandant in The Colditz Story 1955 and Secret Venture 1955.

He died suddenly at the age of 61 in London on 23rd July 1956.
