He was probably best known for his role as the Harbottle character in the Will Hay films which include Windbag the Sailor 1936, Oh Mr Porter! 1937, Old Bones of the River 1938, Ask a Policeman 1938, Convict 99 in 1939 and Where’s That Fire 1940.
In total he appeared in 131 films and to list them all is virtually impossible but a sample of his many films include The House of Trent 1933, Nell Gwyn 1934, alongside Cary Grant in the 1936 film The Amazing Quest of Ernest Bliss, Cheer Boys Cheer 1939, several films with Arthur Askey, It Happened One Sunday 1944, and Green For Danger1946.
He also played the part of grumpy Jim Crowson (pictured) in the Charters and Caldicott film Millions Like Us which was released in 1943 and co-starred Patricia Roc and a young Gordon Jackson.
He died 11th December 1949.
