He appeared in dozens of film and TV productions in his career which spanned six decades starting with his first film in 1935 where he played an uncredited part in Escape me Never.
He went on to appear three times with Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne including his role as Tom Crowson in Millions Like Us, in 1943, the 1st Military Policeman in It’s Not Cricket in 1949 and the Pub Landlord in Stop Press Girl.
He was generally typecast as either a soldier, sailor or police officer – 44 in total - examples of these films include; Convoy 1940, The Day Will Dawn 1942, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp 1943, Tawny Pipit 1944, The October Man 1947, Don’t Ever Leave Me 1949, Madeleine 1950, Pool of London 1951, Laughter in Paradise 1951, Street Corner 1953 and even in a 1970 episode of Coronation Street where he played the part of Major Parrett.
He was probably best known for his portrayal of Major Hughes in The Bridge on the River Kwai in 1957.
His TV appearances were mostly during the 1960’s and 1970’s.
His final role was as the Court Reporter in Ghandi in 1982; he died shortly after at the age of 73.
